The Goodlettsville, Tenn.-based discount retailer—which has five stores in the N.Y., area—is one of nine companies that U.S. Consumer Productf Safety Commission is fining for violatin g the federal leadpaint ban. The penalties settle allegations that the firmsknowingluy manufactured, imported or sold toys and other children’s articles with paintr or other surface coatings that containef lead levels in violatiob of federal law, according to a statementt by the Consumer Product Safety In agreeing to settle the matters, the firms deny the commission’d allegations that they knowingly violated the law.
The product s containing the lead were recalled in 2007 and and include items suchas toys, children’s metal children’s pens, metal water bottles, pencil pouches, sunglasses and Halloweejn pails and baskets. Tests showed that paint or surfacew coatings onthese children’s productz contained lead in excess of 0.06 percent, by One firm’s testing revealed that its productzs contained surface coatings with nearly 60 percen lead. In 1978, a federal ban was put in place whicu prohibited toys andother children’sw articles from having more than 0.06 percent lead (by weight) in paintsx or surface coatings.
