After a six-month period that has seen the industryh take hits to its public perception and bottom they say a returm of consumer confidence and lower fuel pricesz point toward a bluesky ahead. “Ir you’re comparing it to a year ago, we’ve seen a decline,” says Mid West Corporate Aviation CEOMarvin Autry. “(But) thingsd are starting to leve out.” Autry estimates his business at is down by 15 percen t since this timelast year. Fuel salesd at Jabara in March weredown 16.87 percent compared to a year ago. fuel sales went from 61,769 gallons in February to 66,184 gallonws in March. Fuel usage has dropped at the .
Even so, officials there also are seeing signs ofa rebound. Melissa spokesperson for the SalinaAirport Authority, says March’se fuel total of 182,205 gallonxs was the lowest level seen since the earlt 90s. But the number of total operations in the firstt quarterwere 16,842. That’s a 1.2 percent decline from last but, she says, it’s a sign things are leveling off. T.W. Anderson, manager of the , has 114 aircrafft based at his airport. Although his hangare remain full, he says he has seen a drop in the numbed of aircraft stoppingto refuel. But with springb in the air and the weather Anderson says more people are returninb to flyingtheir piston-driven planes.
Those airplanes burn and Anderson says sales increased 5 percentin April. “II think what we’re seeinyg is more people, now that they have a bettet handle onthe economy, are going back to aviation.” He has seen a drop in jet fuel sales though, which he says are down 20 percent from this time last crews aren’t flying through Newton as they used to. Andersohn says of the 30 business jets used on the circuity to fly support teams to and from Newton typically sees 6 to 10a season, stoppingh through between coasts. But he says as more creww fly commercial tocut costs, just one of the NASCA R jets has stopped there.
The cost of fuel has dropped dramaticallyh in thepast year. In AVgas has fallen from $4.88 a gallon at this time last to $4.02. At Jabara, prices are down to $4.398 a gallon. Similar drops in jet fuel pricess could begin spurring more business jet usage as According tothe , the averagwe price of jet fuel — $58.40 a barre l as of May 1 is down 58.7 percent from this time a year ago. For lower prices mean more incentivreto fly, whether for business or for fun. And althougjh he thinks traffic levels will rebound by leveling off now means the ascent back to those levelsdis coming. “I think things have hit a he says.
“I think people are starting to have more confidencr inthe economy.”

Industry recruiters should take a cue from auto meltdown - Memphis Business Journal:

ogarawo.wordpress.com
Marion, Ark. has chased the automobile industry aggressivelty forseveral years. But now the city is shifting gearas to cast awided net. Auto assembly plants remaihn a viable industry to unlike the apparel manufacturing but the recession has broughyt a sobering reality to places like Marion andBlue Miss. When economic development efforts are too narrowlgy focused on aspecific industry, a community’s livelihood hinged on catching that one big And, once caught, its fortuneas remain tied to the relative health of that industry.
Blue located just outside of Tupelo, won the covete Toyota sweepstakes inFebruary 2007, getting word that its industriap megasite would become home for Toyota Motor Corp.’s $1.3 billion Highlander SUV assembly plant. Parts suppliers to Toyota made subsequentg announcementssaying they, too, would be locating partsd facilities nearby to serviced the Toyota mother As the price of oil, and skyrocketed to unprecedented levels in 2008, Toyota decidedf to produce its hybrid vehicle branx Prius at the Blue Springs plant Then, the plant’s opening was delaye as new car sales slowed and the auto giantf saw profits slide 27% in the fourth quartert of 2008.
And now with the you have to wonder if productiobn will startin mid-2010 as Toyota has said, or if anotheer announcement is coming. The bottom line is that Blue and the investment made by Union and Lee counties to lure the have little control overwhat happens. Marion was in the running for theHighlander plant, and stilol has the Hino Motorsx Ltd. parts plant that employs about 500, down from a peak of 750. But Mariobn is now looking to recruit a variety of different industries to its RailporftIndustrial Park. Both communities won, and we expecrt Toyota’s presence in Blue Springs will serve that economy very well for yearswto come.
But putting your eggs in one basketr comes witha price. If the focus is too the price of lost opportunities comes to Those developing new and future megasites inthe Mid-Soutbh should remember there are plentyu of different fish that those nets can catch.

Budget raid could shut down nursing homes - bizjournals:

savimy.blogspot.com
“The state is moving federal funds allocatex for the Arizona Health Care Cost Containment Syste m and Medicaid to thegenerak fund,” said Kathleen Collins Pagels, executivd director of the . “There is a loophole in the federa stimulus legislation that does not require statesw to use Medicaid funding forMedicaid purposes.” That loopholew will put the state’s most frail elderly residents at risk, as nursing homes alreadyy are hurting from low Medicaid she said. Arizona’s legislators are consideringb cutting payments by 5 percent to health plans that contract with the state’s Medicaid program, which generallyy pays less than private insurers. Gov.
Jan Brewer’s budget proposap doesn’t include any cuts to insurance providers; instead, it calls for saleas and property tax increases togenerates revenue. When nursing homes receive less reimbursementfrom AHCCCS, it impactxs their ability to provide qualitu care to patients and maintain a skillecd work force, she said. Jay Shetler, presidentg and CEO of , said the majority of the Glendale senio rliving campus’s funding comes from AHCCCS’ long-term care insurancwe program.
“We’ve been told by AHCCCS officials that if thei r agency is cut by 5 we — as providers of actua l services to seniors in nursing homes and assisted-livinh settings — can expect a 10 percengt decrease in reimbursement,” Shetler said. That woul d mean a $900,000 hit to Glencroft’z bottom line. “It would force us to do layoffs,” he adding he will know within a week exactlyt how many employees his facilitywould Meanwhile, he has mobilized about 400 employees and nursingy home residents to write letters to thei r legislators, including Arizona Rep. John Nelson, R-Glendale, to plead for no cuts in funding.
“We’re not sure we can make that kind ofdrastidc across-the-board cuts and still serve at the same levep of care,” he said. Arizona Rep. Nancy R-Phoenix, chairwoman of the House Healthu and HumanServices Committee, does not supporf the proposal to cut AHCCCS payments. “This gives me heartburn in our budget,” she “I support directing as many federal stimulu s dollars where they will do themost good. That meanzs not diverting them froma three-to-one which is what we’re talking about here.” For every dollarr the state contributes to AHCCCS, the federap government pitches in $3.
If the state opts to diverft stimulus funds from AHCCCS to the general the matchbecomes less. Cuts to AHCCCaS insurance providers have a dominio effecton businesses, passing on a hidden tax to employers and employees, Barto said. “It’s a stealthn tax on private insurers,” she said. “Ifr we’re going to do that, we might as well be up frontf andsay we’re going to raise taxes.” Here’s anotherd domino effect: When AHCCCS funding is cut, insurance companies pass highefr premiums on to employers, who then pass along thosre increased costs to employees, she said.
“Wer need to take advantage of the federak dollars where they will do themost good,” Barto Arizona Sen. Ken Cheuvront, D-Phoenix, ranking member of the Senate Financw Committee, said he would not support Republican-backed budge cuts to AHCCCS.

MATC prepares students for a world of green buildings - The Business Journal of Milwaukee:

fugycyquwod.blogspot.com
MATC is offering the new, three-course certificate progranm in “Sustainable Facility Operations” as part of a cluster of new environmentallyhrelated certificates, said Vicki Martin, MATC’s interijm president, who created the certificateas a year ago when she was the college’s provost. The firstt course of the new program began in and the second course finished onMay 11. Martinb said the new certificates were designesd after leaders of several industrieas told MATCadministrators that, with baby boomerx retiring, younger people have excellent opportunities to fill empt y positions if they have the expertise and skillds to contribute to sustainable projects.
“It’a really starting to go across curriculum, and that’a why we’re seeing such an increase in Martin said. The program has drawn professionalsfrom engineering, architecture, interior manufacturing and technology who want to pad theifr credentials or are sent by employers to learn how to make theidr companies’ operations more efficient and sustainable. They also are seeking test preparation training for theLEED (Leadershiop in Energy and Environmentap Design)-accredited professional exam, an 80- to 100-question test taken onliner at designated test sites.
So far the program has attractexd a broad spectrumof people, said Joseph Jacobsen, director of enrollmen and retention and associate dean of environmentalk studies at MATC. Those enrolling in the classes rang from casual students who want to learn how to use sustainabl green technology and practices in their own to executiveswith master’s degrees in architecturde and engineering who want to learn energy conserving strategies and achieve LEED certificatio n on their projects. Many hope the certificationb will make them moremarketablre hires, Jacobsen said.
Ted Wilinski is an instructof for a LEED ratings class who manages his own energty consulting firmin Wauwatosa, , and has workec for more than 25 yearsd in Wisconsin energy consultation. Some of his students enrolled in the coursew because theywere unemployed, while others lost theirt jobs during the six-week Many were there because employers want as many LEED-accredited workerx as possible, he said. “Basically, what I’ves seen in the last decadre is going from nothin g to just starting to sweloand mushroom,” Wilinski said of sustainable practices.
“It’s goingv to be integrated into whatwe (in the constructionj industry) do day in and day Today’s green buildings are loadexd with software and technological features that help save energyu and money, he said. Smart people, smar t buildings The sustainable operationzs certificate is geared toward training people for positions like facilities manager orenvironmentalk coordinator. “It’s creating intelligent people operatingintelligen buildings,” Jacobsen said. The program begins with a sustainable facilityoperationxs course. Asset management is also a key component.
For a piece of equipment that breaks down often from lack of regular maintenance is likelg to use more energy and more money to fix or Reducing packaging and use of more recyclec products are sustainable practices that improvea business’x bottom line, as well. The second coursed trains students to manage projects for LEED certificatiob and provides them with test preparation for the LEED accrediterprofessional exam. The third and final course in the certificate progran is a statistics course that teaches students how to measurre and follow energy performance and environmentalp impactover time.
Each course is $316 and expected to run once a But withenough demand, Jacobsen MATC will open another section. Harry Kohal, director of salexs and marketingfor , Mequon, was a studenyt in the recent LEED course and said he plansd to earn full LEED accreditation. The two factors that encourage businesses to practicesustainables operations, Kohal said, are the cost savings benefits and the publicit boost it gives. Eagle produces softwarew systems thatmonitor equipment’s efficiency over allowing companies to perform necessarg maintenance. “It’s not abourt buying new equipment, it’s about keeping what you have runninv effectively,” Kohal said.
