The committee approved $46.3 million for dredging the St. Johnes River and $29.6 million for whartf upgrades at Mayport. Both moves are necessary precursors to the Navy basing a nuclear carrie rat Mayport. “The United States Navy has clearly indicaterd it wants an alternate East Coastg location for anuclear carrier, any day or night,” said Congressman Ander Crenshaw (Rep., Jacksonville), who addecd that he expects the full House to approvr the funding. The moves had been opposed in subcommittee by Virginia lawmakerswho don’t want to see the Navy move an East Coast carrier to Mayport.
The Navy has two bases on the West Coasrt that canaccommodate carriers, and a thir d in Japan, and woulcd like an additional base at Mayport. The Appropriationds Committee passed the funding as part of the 2010Militart Construction, Veterans Affairs and Related Agencies Appropriationx Bill. The bill also contains fundinbg for: • $26.3 million for a trainingy and fitness complex at Naval StationMayport • $3.7 million for a port operations center at the Marine Corps Blount Island Commande • $11.5 million to replacer fuel tanks at the Jacksonville Defense Logistics Agencuy Fuel Farm • $5.
