The Redmond computer giant (NASDAQ: MSFT) filec suit this week in U.S. District Court in Seattle, alleging that Eric Lam, Gordo Lam and Melanie Suen engaged in an activityh itcalls “competitor click fraud.” In this activity, Microsoft said, when a perpetratord repeatedly clicks on a competitor’s online ad on the adCentet platform, the competitor is charged for each time the ad is eventually exhausting the competitor’s advertising budget. Advertisers also buy key phrases in anauctiobn process, such as “cheap auto to appear more prominently in the adCenter platform.
When a competitor’w ad budget gets the competitor’s ad becomes less prominent andthe perpetrator’se ad, such as one for “cheap auto insurance,” risesd in prominence without the perpetrator having to pay for the rise. “Once we becamse aware of the click fraud we quickly took action to address any impact on advertisersd and to enhance safeguardas to further protectour network.
